Cheap housing concept unveiled in Kenya

Three investor companies from America, Britain and India have teamed up and launched what is to be Kenya’s most affordable brick and mortar gated community houses.

The companies, Blue Haven Initiative which is a family organization from US, has partnered with Metropark Developers and Housing Infrastructure from India together with Housing Infrastructure to put up a Sh3 billion housing project in Athi River.

The project which will be Known as Karibu Homes will be made up from 1,082 houses on a 20-acre plot in Athi River which is just a kilometre off Mombasa Road.

One bedroom unit will go for Sh1.4 million while two and three bedroom units will go for 2.9 and 5 million respectively. Currently, a one-bedroom house in the area is selling at an average of Sh6 million, a two-bedroom at Sh 12.2million.

The community will enjoy services such as 24-hour security, commercial center, community center, a daycare, basketball courts, children’s playgrounds, maintenance of common areas and garbage collection.

On 20th November during the announcement of the partnership, Blue Haven’s Ian Simmons said that mortar and brick houses are preferred by more than 80 per cent of Kenyans accord to a research they conducted. He also added that their initiative is to offer the most affordable by giving Kenyans the freedom to choose the finish they like as well as moving in and finishing later. This will reduce the cost by 25%.

“Research has it that there is a growing demand for housing in Nairobi and its environs” Mr Simmons, also director of Karibu Homes Board said.

Karibu Homes will make the houses widely affordable because it will allows buyers to choose between those with basic standard finishes, and those with enhanced finishes like tiles and cupboards, among other facilities.

“We are excited about this investment … and we have the experience to deliver quality homes in secure, gated communities, at much more affordable prices than are currently available in Nairobi,” explained Mr Dipank Sharma, Chairman of Karibu Homes and Managing Director of MDHI, a major player in India’s real estate sector.
